——A true story of how Shanghai WUYUE customized the A27H/Y threaded safety valve for high-temperature steam and corrosive media
In the industrial safety world, every second counts when pressure builds up beyond control. In late 2024, a medium-sized steam generator manufacturer in Vietnam faced a recurring nightmare: the threaded safety valves on their hot water and steam testing skids kept failing after just three months of operation. The valves would either leak continuously or fail to open at the set pressure, putting their technicians and expensive equipment at risk.
Their procurement manager, Ms. Linh, reached out to us with a desperate request: “We need a reliable threaded safety valve that can handle 180°C steam and occasional hot water hammer. We’ve tried two local suppliers and one Chinese discount brand. None lasted more than 90 days. Can Shanghai WUYUE really solve this?”
The answer came in the form of our A27H/Y Safety Valve – a spring-loaded, micro-open, unclosed (open bonnet) threaded safety valve designed specifically for water, air, steam, and corrosive media up to 200°C. But standard off-the-shelf products wouldn’t work. We needed to customize.
This is the story of how Shanghai WUYUE Pump Valve Group Co., Ltd. applied engineering expertise and manufacturing precision to turn a failing application into a long-term success.
Ms. Linh’s company produces small steam generators for textile factories and food processing plants. Each generator undergoes a 48-hour pressure test on a dedicated skid before shipment. The test skid uses three A27H type safety valves (DN25, set at 8 bar) to protect the steam drum and the hot water circuit.
| Time Period | Observed Failure |
|---|---|
| Month 1-2 | Valves worked fine during daily testing. |
| Month 3 | Seat leakage began – steam escaping continuously from the outlet. |
| Month 4 | Set pressure drifted upward by 0.5-0.8 bar. |
| Month 5 | Valves either stuck closed (no relief) or stuck open (continuous blowdown). |
Ms. Linh’s team disassembled several failed valves and found heavy mineral scale deposits on the disc and seat, plus corrosion pitting on the spring and stem. The original valves used cast iron bodies (HT200) with untreated 50CrVA springs – fine for clean steam, but not for the slightly alkaline feed water (pH 8.5-9.0) used in their region.
“We were replacing safety valves every four months across 12 test skids,” Ms. Linh explained. “The downtime and replacement costs were killing our margins.”
When our engineering team received the failed valve samples and operating data, we immediately recognized that a standard A27H (cast iron, D507 seat) would suffer the same fate. The customer needed three specific improvements:
Original: Cast iron (HT200) – susceptible to graphitic corrosion in alkaline hot water.
Our solution: A27W-P (CF8 stainless steel) – provides excellent resistance to alkaline corrosion and mineral scaling.
Original: Uncoated 50CrVA spring – rusted and lost tension.
Our solution: 50CrVA spring with fluoroplastic (PTFE) coating – prevents direct contact with moisture and steam, maintaining consistent spring force.
Original: “H” type (D507 alloy) – wore down quickly due to frequent cycling.
Our solution: “Y” type (stellite/Co-based cemented carbide) – provides exceptional wear resistance and hardness, even with small particles in the water.
Additionally, we recommended switching from the closed bonnet (A22 series) to the open bonnet/unclosed design of the A27 series. Why? Because in steam service with possible scale formation, an open bonnet allows visual inspection of stem movement and easier field cleaning without full disassembly.
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Model | A27W-16P (customized) |
| Body Material | CF8 stainless steel (ZG1Cr18Ni9Ti) |
| Seat/Disc Material | 1Cr18Ni9Ti with Stellite “Y” hardfacing |
| Spring | 50CrVA + fluoroplastic coating |
| Set Pressure | 8.0 bar (±2%) |
| Connection | G1″ male thread (BSP) |
| Temperature | 185°C maximum |
| Bonnet Type | Open (unclosed) – for easy inspection |
Before shipping the first batch of 20 units, we subjected the customized A27W-16P valves to a rigorous qualification test program at our Shanghai facility:
Requirement: Open at 8.0 bar ±3%
Result: All 20 valves opened between 7.92 and 8.08 bar (average ±1.5%)
Requirement: Zero visible leakage at 90% of set pressure (7.2 bar)
Result: 100% passed – bubble-tight shut-off for 10 minutes
Protocol: 500 cycles from 0 to 8.5 bar (overpressure) using 185°C steam with pH 9.0 water
Result:
No degradation in set pressure (still within ±2%)
No seat leakage after final cycle
Spring coating intact, no corrosion
Protocol: 100 cycles with water containing 500 ppm total dissolved solids (simulating worst-case feed water)
Result: Minor scale deposits on disc, but Stellite seat still sealed perfectly
We shared the test report with Ms. Linh, who approved a 3-month field trial on their busiest test skid.
The field trial exceeded all expectations. After three months of daily operation (approximately 240 pressure cycles), the A27W-16P valve showed:
No visible leakage from the seat or stem.
Consistent set pressure – tested monthly within 7.95-8.05 bar.
Clean spring and stem – the PTFE coating worked perfectly.
Minimal scale buildup on internal parts.
Ms. Linh’s maintenance log told the story:
| Month | Previous Valves (Competitor) | Shanghai WUYUE Custom Valve |
|---|---|---|
| Month 3 | Already leaking | No leakage, set pressure stable |
| Month 6 | Replaced twice | Still functioning perfectly |
| Month 9 | Third replacement installed | Passed annual calibration check |
| Month 12 | Fourth replacement needed | Removed for inspection – still serviceable |
*“We’ve now standardized on Shanghai WUYUE’s A27W-16P valves for all 12 test skids,”* Ms. Linh reported six months later. “Our safety valve replacement cost has dropped by 80%, and we’ve eliminated unplanned downtime. This isn’t just a valve – it’s a solution.”
The A27H/Y/W safety valve platform is designed for applications where simplicity, reliability, and easy maintenance matter most. Key features include:
Provides precise, proportional relief – ideal for liquid or compressible fluid systems where full-lift discharge would cause system shock.
Allows visual confirmation of stem movement.
Enables field cleaning and inspection without complete disassembly.
Lower cost than fully enclosed designs.
| Model | Body Material | Seat Hardfacing | Best For |
